Every organisation or sole trader who processes personal information needs to pay a data protection fee to the ICO, unless they are exempt. Exemptions are rare so there is a high probability that you must pay. The law that covers this is the Data Protection (Charges and Information) Regulations 2018. Individuals and organisations that process personal data need to pay a data protection fee to the Information Commissioners Office (ICO).

Estate agency fined

An estate agency was fined £80,000 for failing to keep tenants’ data safe.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has fined a London estate agency £80,000 for leaving 18,610 customers’ personal data exposed for almost two years.

The security breach happened at Life at Parliament View Ltd (LPVL). The breach happened when it transferred personal data from its server to a partner organisation and failed to switch off an ‘anonymous authentication’ function. This failure meant access restrictions were not implemented. Consequently, this allowed anyone going online to have full access to all the data stored between March 2015 and February 2017.

It’s not just big companies that will receive a GDPR fine from the ICO

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has issued a fine to a London-based pharmacy for £275,000. This was for failing to ensure the security of special category data.

We have all heard about Marriott and British Airways receiving a GDPR fine for data protection regulatory breaches. However, it’s not just big companies that can be fined by the ICO. Doorstep Dispensaree Ltd is a supplier of medicines to customers and care homes. The pharmacy left approximately 500,000 documents in unlocked containers at the back of its premises in Edgware.
